It is a disease of the basement membrane, underlying the corneal epithelium, resulting in poor healing of the epithelium with recurrent erosions spontaneous or following a first trauma.This disease may be associated with epithelial dystrophy of the Cogan type, also causing double vision related to an irregularity of the corneal surface. 

Surgical treatment: Therapeutic Excimer Laser-
This is the same Excimer Laser used in refractive surgery. The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, under local anesthesia by drops:- Regularization of the corneal surface, thanks to the Excimer Laser, by the photo-therapeutic keratectomy technique, in order to improve visual quality and lead to better healing and permanent adhesion of the epithelium.- In case of superficial opacification of the cornea, the therapeutic Excimer Laser (identical to that of refractive surgery) is used to abrade the opaque surface and recover better corneal transparency compatible with good vision.- The complications of the Therapeutic Excimer laser are identical to those of the PRK or TRANS-PRK laser.
